I love books that have a sense of place – and boy oh boy does “Antarctica” have that in spades. The action doesn’t really start until page 260, as the beginning of the book is setting up the scene, meeting the characters, and talking about landscape. Once the action starts, it becomes more interesting as a novel.
Kim Stanley Robinson (yes, I’m on a kick reading his books) got an NFS Artist & Writers’ Grant in the mid-90s and his familiarity with the continent and his in-depth research shows in this novel.
If you have any interest in the continent of Antarctica, I highly recommend this one.
