    Fermata

    Exhibition Opportunity at Kala Gallery
    Application Deadline: April 18, 2016
    Exhibition Dates: May 19 – July 1, 2016

    Exhibition Description:
Kala Gallery announces Fermata, a call for entries exhibition open to artists working in all media. Fermata seeks artists who explore the psychological disjunction in our contemporary life caused by its fast pace and rapid changes, such as disconnections between mind and information, body and image, reason and result, and what is real and what we believe is real, and more.

Musical notation fermata indicates prolongation of the time value of a note or rest at the performer’s discretion. Without a fermata, our mind might not catch up with the progression of music. Our information driven society continuously feeds us information. How do we process this feed in real time? We search many things online: places to travel, partners to meet, things to buy, pets to adopt, apartments to live, but there are disconnections between expectations formulated by online searches and real life experiences. Receiving so much information in such a short time, we are losing mental room to formulate coherent ideas, construct memories and/or create connections between fantasy and reality.

The exhibition Fermata investigates notions of psychological attachment and detachment, ideas of time, patience and impatience, speed of life, alternative approaches to handle information, and more. Work will be selected by Mayumi Hamanaka, Kala’s Gallery Director.

    DEADLINE: March 18th, 2019

    https://www.arc-sf.com/sanctuary.html

    DESCRIPTION
The word “Sanctuary” has recently been associated with individual and municipality resistance to the Federal enforcement of immigration laws. “Sanctuary” itself has a wide range of definitions: a place offering shelter, a sacred or consecrated place, a container of holy things, a refuge for humans or wildlife, and a place offering immunity from law. We are seeking works that broadly define “Sanctuary.” Works that convey political activism, faith and religion, wildlife protections, and a place of refuge, peace and safety are welcome, as well as abstract works that express the meaning of “Sanctuary.”

    CATEGORIES ACCEPTED
