The de Young Museum
Everyone is raving about the Keith Haring exhibition at the de Young!
Keith is a dear to my heart – if you are a reader of this site, you know why. We spent a year going to the same art school in Pittsburgh before he made his move to New York. I knew the eighteen year old Keith and remember him well.
This is one of the first artist-at-large field trips of the year. I chose February 3rd for two reasons – the museum fee is free, although we still have to pay the exhibition entrance fee, and there is a free docent lecture at 2:15 that day in the auditorium. No need to purchase anything if you just want to meet for the lecture.
The only purpose of booking below is to tally our numbers and so I know who to look for.
Please sign up as a member on the site (it’s free!) to ease the flow of communication about our events.
Exhibition tickets must be purchased either in advance on the de Young Museum web site, or take your chance at the door on the day of the field trip.
Make sure you choose February 3, 2015 / Tue 02/03/15 from the drop down menu if you are purchasing advance tickets.
What we’ll do: This is a loosely structured field trip. Everyone has their own way of viewing exhibitions, so we can move through it together, or as a loose pack, or individually and meetup afterwards for lunch break. We can discuss this more after we find out who is coming along! I want to make it a fun and informative day for all.
My advance purchase ticket is for 11am.
Around 10:30-11am – around 1pm: Meet in the museum courtyard (or the lobby if it’s raining) and view the exhibition together
Around 1pm – 2pm: Break for lunch
Around 2-2:15pm: Attend the lecture
Until 5:15pm: Museum galleries are open until this time.
What to bring: Camera, sketchbook or notebook, lunch money
Lunch: There is a museum cafe and also a number of restaurants around 9th near Lincoln or Irving, or we can brown-bag it.

Keith Haring: The Political Line
Tuesday February 3, 2015 (First Tuesday)
Herbst Special Exhibition Galleries, de Young Museum
Meet in the courtyard near the entrance to the museum at 10:30-45am.
Keith Haring: The Political Line is having its US premiere at the de Young and is the first major Haring show on the West Coast in nearly two decades. Many of the works are on loan from the Keith Haring Foundation, New York, with supplemental loans from public and private collections. Several pieces have not been published or on public view since the artist’s death, in 1990 … more on the de Young site.

The How-To: Everyone is responsible for their own tickets, as well as food and transportation. Each person should first commit to going by booking here on this page. Then, when you are ready, go to the de Young site and order your ticket in advance, or for those of us who don’t want to pay in advance, we can meet outside of the museum in the courtyard and stand in line together.
NOTE: Because this is my first attempt at organizing a group field trip. Please feel free to offer suggestions on my organization skills.
Bookings are closed for this event.
